Homemade Face Paint

Man I wish I had posted this for you last week, I just found it a few minutes ago!  I realized that I closed all weekend and am teaching today, so I haven't had time to run and get face paints now that the kiddos finally figured out what they want to be for Halloween.  So I knew I'd have to run uptown after work and school and grab facepaints and rush home to get the kiddos ready.  Well, here are some ways to make your own face paints!  How easy are these?  My boys are going to be mummies and I was going to paint their faces white with black around their eyes.  I never thought to just use regular old baking flour!!  Now I don't have to run uptown today!  AND I saved myself some money!!!  Plus, I have so much makeup, I know I have black eyeshadow to use on the boys, so that's also taken care of.

Do you have any other tricks for Halloween makeup?  Do share!

Learn how to make your face look like a blood-sucking vampire's!
These easy face paint recipes show how to make homemade face paint using common household ingredients. Mix and store in baby food jars or discarded film canisters. Be ready for your next kids party or dress-up event.
Face painting is a fun summer activity that you'll find at festivals and fairs-often for free. But it's fun to do this yourself for birthday parties, family reunions or just some weekend fun.
Always start with a clean face.Baby wipes work well for this. Apply thin layers of paint and allow them to dry in between colors. (Blow on the painted spot and you'll not only dry it a little faster but you will have a giggly kid too!)
Face paint Recipe #1
1 tsp. Cornstarch
½ tsp. Cold cream
½ tsp. Water
Food coloring (variety of colors)

In each small container, mix cornstarch and cold cream until well blended. Add water and stir. Add food coloring one drop at a time until you get the desired color. Paint small designs on face with a small paintbrush; remove with soap and water. Store covered.
Face paint Recipe #2
3 tblsps. Cornstarch
1 tblsp. Flour
3/4 cup Karo light corn syrup
1/4 cup water
½ tsp. Liquid food coloring

Mix cornstarch and flour together in a bowl. Gradually stir in Karo syrup and water until smooth. Divide mixture into individual containers as needed and tint each one with the food coloring of your choice. Leave one batch un-tinted.

Body Paint
baby shampoo
powdered tempera paints

Add tempera paint to shampoo until desired color is reached.
Face and Body Paint
1/2 cup baby lotion
1/2 tsp. dish detergent
powdered tempera paints

Mix all ingredients and store in air-tight jars. (Baby food jars work well.) Use paint brush to paint designs on skin. Paint will wash off easily because the dish detergent has been added.
Clown Make-up
Blend on a paper plate:
2 tblsp. shortening
5 tsps. cornstarch
1 tsp. flour
Dab of Vaseline
Add food coloring for various colors.

In bowl, mix shortening, flour and cornstarch until smooth. Mix in a dab of Vaseline. Add food coloring one drop at a time until you get the desired color. Use a sponge or fingers to apply paint to a large area, such as an entire face. To apply with a small brush, thin paint with a little water first. Remove with soap and water. Store covered.
Fake Blood for Halloween Party Make-up
Karo brand corn syrup
Red and blue food coloring
Milk
Add some red food coloring to the corn syrup, then just a drop or two of blue to get a more realistic dark color. Milk will make the blood appear more opaque and more realistic. Note: This mixture is sticky and can stain clothes.
More Fun Make-up Tips:
To lightly blacken faces, carefully burn a cork and when cool, rub on the face.
For a ghoulish look, add a dusting of flour to already made up faces.
For a stubbly bearded look, sprinkle tobacco over a thin layer of Vaseline.

Thank you so much, Easy-Homemade-Recipes, for all these recipes!

FREE Mr. Goodcents Subs

It says one coupon per family - I'm assuming they just don't want one coupon for each of your kids, but that each child still gets a FREE sub.  We might do this and save it for cold lunches tomorrow :D

It also doesn't state that a parent needs to buy a sub.  However, their subs aren't too shabby, so pick one up for yourself or surprise your hubby with a good lunch tomorrow!

Where to Get Coupons

There are several ways to get coupons to add to your stash.  Here are my favorite ways to get coupons...
  1. Contact the company that makes a product you love and tell them why you love their product.  Just a quick few sentences is all it takes.  Tell them what it is specifically that you love about their product, how it helps you save time, you bond with your children while cooking their product, whatever.  Just be honest.  Kristin at Couponing to Disney has a great list of 5 a Day companies to email.  I don't usually follow these as I think the companies get bombarded with emails all at the same time, so I'll go thru her master list and just grab a few here and there.  Here's my 5 a Day shopping spree I did last year that she posted on her site :D
  2. Gas Stations will have lots of coupons for candy and pop I have found lately.  Especially gas stations that aren't overly busy.  Casey's General Store is a good one I have found in Mankato.  I've found coupons in the candy isle, on the doors to the pop selection and also up by the counters.
  3. As I shop in stores, look for Blinkies and Peelies on shelves near products you normally buy.  I will usually grab a few of each and save them for another time and sometimes another store.
  4. Sign up for loyalty programs.  Any store that is in Mankato, I am pretty much signed up for their loyalty program, which also includes birthday bonuses.  So, look up your favorite stores, or even stores you rarely shop at, and sign up for their email or texting programs.  Many offer sign up bonuses, like Kohls.  If it's available, sign up for their mailing lists also, JCPenney is notorious for sending out $10 off a $10 purchase coupons a few times per year.
  5. Hotels, restaurants, and the ER are also places I've found coupons.  Yes, my daugher swallowed a dime on a Sunday, so when we went to the ER for x-rays I found several inserts just laying around :D  Anywhere places have papers for people to read is where you'll find coupons laying around.
  6. Check your Dollar Store for the Sunday paper.  I did this for several months before Mankato dropped their coupon inserts.  I do believe they are getting them back, but now I'm in the habit of buying them from CVS.  The Pioneer Press is the cheapest in town, tied for the Mankato Free Press if the coupons have returned to the paper.
Where do you find coupons?  Besides buying papers, of course :D

Menu Plan Monday

Last week I knew I would be gone most nights so I planned a week full of crock pot meals.  Unfortunately, my job took so much of my time (see the lunchbox addition) that I have no idea what my family ate for supper last week because I didn't even have time to put the crock pot meals together.  Wait - they had eggs and sausages on Thursday, because I did see them for a few minutes on my way from work to a meeting.  Anyway, last week was a zoo and I plan to do better this week.  :o)  I'm keeping it simple, but I think they'll appreciate getting back to "normal" again.

Monday:  Baked Potatoes, Broccoli, Deviled Eggs
Tuesday:  Chicken Taco Bowls, Carrots and Dip
Wednesday:  Pork Chops, Baked Beans, Bread or Rolls
Thursday:  Tator Tot Hotdish, Green Beans
Friday:  French Toast, Eggs, Fruit
Saturday:  Hamburgers, Fries, Raw Veggies and Dip

That's it - keeping it simple.  What's on your menu this week?

Menu Plan Monday - Lunchbox Edition

I have to confess - I have no idea what my children found to eat for school lunches last week.  Is that terrible?  I work for a company that primarily sells Halloween items, and I saw more of my office than my home last week.  This week, I've stocked up the lunch box supplies, and am getting back on track.  There's still some catching up to do tomorrow, because I don't actually have any of the frig items prepared, but they are in the house and available for Monday morning.

In the coming weeks I'd still like to work on adding more homemade and /or raw food choices, even though I took a another short cut this week with processed food.  I'll be on the prowl for easy and nutritious lunchbox ideas.  So please feel free to share anything that works for you and your kiddos.  (hint, hint)

Here are our lunch choices this week:

From the pantry: (pre-packed into single serving containers)
Cheez Its
Chewy Granola Bars
Snack Chips (variety pack)
Breadstick / Cheese Packs
Natural Almonds
Bananas

From the 'frig / freezer:
String Cheese
Carrots
Go-gurt
Pre-made "uncrustable" sandwiches (PB&J)
Cucumbers
Grapes
Hard Boiled Eggs
Cottage Cheese

Now it's your turn - I'd love to hear what's going to be in your child's lunchbox this week.  Thanks in advance for sharing!

Halloween Kitchen Fun

We aren't the biggest fans of Halloween, but the kids get so excited, so I usually make cupcakes with ghosts on them.  It's really easy...

I added red and yellow food coloring to a cake mix to make the cupcakes orange.  I used a mini muffin pan because I didn't have enough time to make two batches of regular sized cupcakes.  These took approx 9 minutes in the oven :D

For the frosting, I made up my own recipe, and since I don't usually measure, I can't give you exact amounts :D

I did use one stick of softened butter, and I used a fork to cream it.  Then I mixed in some powdered sugar, maybe 2 cups worth???  Added about a teaspoon of almond extract and a capful of milk - a tablespoonish of milk.  Then I taste tested it -  if it tastes good, leave it.  If it tastes too buttery, then add more powdered sugar. :D

I grabbed a ziplock baggie and cut a small hole in the corner of it.  You could put in one of those plastic end pieces you'd put in frosting bags when you will be attaching a decorating tip, it will help prevent the baggie from tearing.  Then I just made blobs of frosting on top of the mini cupcakes.

For the eyes - and hair for the ghosts Eve made into girls - I gave the kids a toothpick to dip into Hershey's chocolate syrup.  I didn't know I had any of this, so if I didn't find any in the 'frig I was ready to just mix an itty bitty bit of milk and cocoa powder.  Mini chocolate chips were my first choice, but Hubby got into them and I found the bag in the garbage.  *shaking my head*

What fun treats and projects are you doing with your kiddos this weekend?

Aldi Ad 10/31/2011

I've been shopping a little more at Aldi lately.  I've found that it's a great place to pick up the fruits, veggies, cheese and snack items that I don't stock pile when they aren't on sale somewhere else.  They don't take coupons, but they do have low prices.  If you've never shopped there, you might want to check it out.  Just don't forget to bring a quarter, because you will need it to rent a shopping cart.  You will also need to bring your own bags or boxes to transport your groceries home unless you purchase bags at the store.

This week's weekly ad can be seen HERE.  They don't mail it out, and I think it varies by region, so go ahead and put in your own zip code if you want to get the most accurate sale prices.  This week I think I'm going to pick up the wood baking utensil set on their home page for just $1.99 because my spatula broke a while ago.

Are YOU an Aldi shopper?

Wal-Mart weekly ad Match up 10/30/2011

Walmart has an updated coupon policy that you can read HERE.  This week there are a number of things you can get for free or for cheap.  Thanks to Definitely Deals for putting together the list.  I'd love to hear if the prices on the list are accurate  for your area.  Prices tend to vary by region, so it would be interesting to see which regions fall in line with our area for future posts.  Thanks in advance for your help and feedback!

Cub Foods Ad Match Up 10/30 - 11/5/11

DO you have a Cub Foods? One of the nice things about Cub for those of us who love coupons is that they allow stacking of store and manufacturer coupons. They also accept expired coupons for up to 90 days after the printed date on the coupon. This week's ad match-up is from Definitely Deals, another Minnesota based blog.
What's on YOUR list this week?  I haven't actually sat down to look at the ad yet, but the cupboards and stock pile are running low so I'm afraid my list might be long this week.......

CVS Ad Match Up 10/30 - 11/5/2011

CVS is one of my favorite stores for personal care and paper product deals. If you are new to CVS shopping, make sure you sign up for the Extra Care Card so you can take advantage of the Extra Care Bucks offers each week. Once you get started, this is one of the easiest ways I have found to get things for free. This week's ad match up comes to us via Pocket Your Dollars. I'm not sure what I'll pick up this week.  From what I've read online there are some good deals to be had..........

Please leave a comment and let us know if you find anything great this week or if you get any good coupons from the magic coupon machine. Also, check back during the week to see what unexpected deals others are finding and to see money saving scenarios you may be able to use.

BzzAgent - Burt's Bees

I, Sister C, was given Burt's Bees Natural Skin Solutions to try through BzzAgent.  Here are my opinions about them...

1.  I'm not a fan of coconut smell, so it took a bit to get used to that.  I don't think it has coconut in it, but that's the fragrance it reminds me of.  I have no problem ignoring a smell if I know it's healthy for me :D
2.  I have been using Artistry for over 10 years now.  So I'm leary about using another product on my face.  But I left my Artistry at home and only took Burt's Bees with me to Wisconsin last week.  I have been using it for 7 days in a row now, just once a day because that's all I remember to do :D
3.  I like it.  My skin stays soft all day long.  As the weather gets colder and a bit more harsh on my skin, I'm curious to see if this will hold up.  So far it has.  Artistry has always been fantastic to me, but if I don't put enough moisturizer on my face, I can tell later in the day my skin is a bit drier, especially as the weather gets colder.
4.  I really love that it has so many natural products in it.  Although I personally haven't had time to look at the back of the bottles to see what's all in it, I still love this product.  I might even use it on my hands as they tend to get more dried out during the winter time with all the handwashing I have to do at work.  Normally I do not use lotions at all, I stay hydrated by drinking A LOT of water all day long.
5.  My face stays moisturized without the greasy residue that many moisturizers have.  I love this about Burt's Bees.  I do not get it with Artistry either, it's what I also look for in a moisturizer.
6.  Not sure if I will completely switch over at all.  I want a moisturizer without sunscreen in it.  I believe our skin needs the sun, God made our bodies to be outdoors, so I don't agree in using sunscreen.  This is one thing I do not like about Artistry.  I love that Burt's Bees has no sunscreen in it!  This is a major factor I consider as I look for a new moisturizer.  And I did not see anything about sunscreen in the ingredients list.
7.  The facial cleanser I think worked well.  I'm used to one that foams up when you use it, and this one does not, but I feel like my face is clean, so I'm happy with it.  I did try using it as a body wash, and I did not like it as it didn't foam up lol

I have several samples, if you see me - ask for one :D  I also have coupons I'll share later :D

Go HERE to check it out online.
